The ring wall system Burggraben is an early / high medieval fortification in the state forest Burgholz in the Wuppertal district of Cronenberg ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).

The ring wall system is located at the end of a spur of the Burggrafenberg (282.8 m above sea level ), an etymological development of the older name Burggrawenberg (= Burggrabenberg ), which points to the mouth of the Burgholzbach valley in the Wupper valley . The facility is located in the middle of the forest in the lower third of the Burggrafenberg at 227 m above sea level.

Only terrain formations in the forest remain from the ring wall system . The facility, which is under protection as a ground monument , includes a 25 m long moat with a wall behind. Trench width 7 m, trench depth 1–1.5 m, wall width 8 m, wall height 0.8–1 m, wall height above the bottom of the trench 2.6 m. At the western end of the trench, continuing from this, a step-shaped cut into the terrain begins, which is approx. 45 m wide and slowly tapering off in the steeper slope; Step width about 5 m.
history
Nothing is known about the builders and residents of the castle complex. According to a local legend , it is said to have been the seat of a knight from Kronenberg .
