The Rio Cacheu - also called Rio Farim - is a river in northern Guinea-Bissau .
course
The river has its source at Contobeul and, after 257 kilometers, flows into a wide estuary in the Atlantic Ocean near the city of Cacheu . It runs along the border with Senegal .
The Rio Cacheu is a very slowly flowing, shallow river and overflows its banks in rainy seasons.
traffic
For large ships (2000 t) the river is navigable 97 kilometers inland, for smaller ships about 200 kilometers to the city of Farim . The navigability makes the Rio Cacheu one of the most important transport routes into the interior of Guinea-Bissau.
ecology
Since 2000, the river has been part of the Parque Natural dos Tarrafes do Rio Cacheu . Among other things, numerous animals can be seen in the area of the river, including dolphins ( Tursiops truncatus and Sousa teuszii ), hippopotamuses ( Hippopotamus amphibius ), manatees ( Trichechus senegalensis ), bush bucks ( Tragelaphus scriptus ) and green monkeys ( Cercopithecus aethiops ). Crocodiles ( Crocodylus niloticus and Crocodylus tetraspis) can also be found there.
