history

Behnkenhagen was first mentioned as Benekenhaghen in 1304 . In the certificate of March 5, 1304, the princes of Rügen Wizlaw III. and Zambor (Sambor) the Heiligengeisthaus in Stralsund the ownership of the villages Ahrendsee and Behnkenhagen. On March 8, 1304, the brothers Pritbur, Nikolaus and Thece von Borantenhagen (Boranteshagen and also von Putbus) sell the property from Ahrendsee and Behnkenhagen to the Heiligengeisthaus in Stralsund.

With these documents it becomes clear that there was only one place with the name at the time. The distinction between large and small was probably introduced much later.

1835 appeared in the Prussian Urmes Tischblatt (PUM) as a one-kilometer-long street village with the estate at the eastern end and the village along the street to the western end. The shepherd's homestead was located south of the center of the village. At the western end of the village there were 4 farms with some farm workers' cottages. This part of the village later became independent as Behnkendorf (until today). To the west of it was the so-called Klein Behnkenhagen , which consisted of only two farms and two cottages.

In 1871, in 1871, Groß Behnkenhagen had the following official statistics: Groß Behnkenhagen - farming village had 25 residential buildings in which 34 households were present. The residential area had 153 inhabitants, in 1867 there were still 167. Groß Behnkenhagen - Vorwerk had 6 residential buildings in which 10 households were available. The residential area had 65 inhabitants, compared to 69 in 1867. All residents of the residential areas had the Protestant denomination.

In 1880, according to the measuring table sheet (MTB), the living spaces were changed again. The aforementioned farming village (later Behnkendorf) was now assigned to Klein Behnkenhagen. The estate in the Groß Behnkenhagen part was modernized more compactly and there were only a few farm workers' cottages. It was probably the part labeled Vorwerk in the statistics from 1871.

In the MTB of 1920, the trisection of the settlement, which is still valid today, was recorded. Groß Behnkenhagen, Behnkendorf and Klein Behnkenhagen were now created . The estate in Groß Behnkenhagen expands again and a park was created. The associated farm workers' settlement was also modernized and moved closer to the estate.

With the land reform of 1945, the estate was reduced to the manor house, park and a few farm buildings, and several new farms were built along Dorfstrasse. Later, an agricultural complex (LPG) was built north of the property, which was reduced in size and modernized after 1990.

Groß Behnkenhagen belonged to the municipality of Behnkendorf . This merged on June 7, 2009 with the communities of Brandshagen , Horst , Kirchdorf , Miltzow , Reinberg and Wilmshagen to form the new community of Sundhagen.
