The Stralsund junction of the A 20 is 15 km away. history

Behnkendorf was first mentioned together with Ahrendsee on March 8, 1304 in a deed of purchase. In 1323 the St. Spiritus Hospital in Stralsund owned the village of Ahrendsee. It also had high jurisdiction over the whole village.

Behnkendorf was shown late on the relevant maps. The place is not recorded in the Prussian original table sheet (PUM) from 1835. His current position belonged to Groß Behnkenhagen. Also in Messtischblatt (MTB) from 1880, it was listed as Good small Behnkenhagen.

The state statistics from 1871 also know neither the village nor the manor district called Behnkendorf.

In 1920 Behnkendorf was recorded for the first time in the maps (MTB 1920) as an independent place with a north-west facing Vorwerk. The settlement consisted of a small estate and a street village in the direction of Klein Behnkenhagen.

After the land reform of 1945, the farm remained in the village, but several new farms were built. The Vorwerk, 1 km northwest, fell desolate. A small LPG complex was built in the south of the village .

On July 1, 1950, the previously independent community of Hildebrandshagen was incorporated.

Behnkendorf belonged to the state of Mecklenburg , from July 25, 1952 to the Rostock district and from October 3, 1990 to the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Until June 11, 1994 it was in the district of Grimmen in its respective area and then in the district of North Western Pomerania .

The municipality Behnkendorf merged on June 7th, 2009 with the municipalities Brandshagen , Horst , Kirchdorf , Miltzow , Reinberg and Wilmshagen to form the municipality Sundhagen. It consisted of the districts of Ahrendsee, Groß-Behnkenhagen, Hildebrandshagen (incorporated on July 1, 1950), Klein-Behnkenhagen and Behnkendorf.
