About this picture

The district of Northern Pomerania was a district that was enlarged in the course of the district reform in 2011 and renamed the district of Western Pomerania-Rügen a few days later .

geography

The district of North Western Pomerania was in the north of the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . The district had a long coastline along the Baltic Sea in the north . Neighboring districts were in the northeastern district of Rügen , in the east of Mecklenburg Western Pomerania , in the southern district Demmin and Güstrow and in the west of the district of Bad Doberan . The independent city of Stralsund protrudes from the Baltic Sea in the northeast into the district area.

The most important rivers in Northern Pomerania are the Recknitz , Trebel and Barthe . The district area also includes the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula chain south of the Baltic Sea, which is an important tourist area.

history

The district of North Western Pomerania was formed in 1994 from the former GDR districts of Stralsund , Grimmen and Ribnitz-Damgarten . The historical border between Pomerania and Mecklenburg was disregarded as the Ribnitz-Damgarten district also included some former Mecklenburg communities in a small strip west of the Recknitz.

In the course of a district reform in 2011 , the districts of Northern Pomerania, Rügen and the Hanseatic City of Stralsund became parts of the new district of Western Pomerania-Rügen (planning name: District of Northern Pomerania ) with its administrative headquarters in Stralsund.
