The baroque administrative building from the Swedish era in Franzburg is the seat of the Franzburg-Richtenberg office (2008)

In the Franzburg-Richtenberg ( district of Vorpommern-Rügen in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern ) two cities and eight municipalities are united to carry out their administrative business. The administrative office is located in the regional town of Franzburg, which is part of the administrative district . The office was formed on March 25, 1992 from the cities of Franzburg and Richtenberg and the communities of Gremersdorf, Buchholz, Oebelitz, Millienhagen , Velgast and Weitenhagen . On July 6, 1994, the formerly independent communities Altenhagen and Schuenhagen were incorporated into the community of Velgast. On June 13, 1999, the communities of Gremersdorf and Buchholz merged to form the community of Gremersdorf-Buchholz and the communities of Oebelitz and Millienhagen to form the community of Millienhagen-Oebelitz . The municipality Papenhagen came on January 1, 2004 from the dissolved office Kronskamp to the office Franzburg-Richtenberg. On February 15, 2004, the communities of Glewitz , Splietsdorf and Wendisch Baggendorf were added from the dissolved Trebeltal office .

The administrative area has a large north-south extension (35 kilometers) and extends from the Barthetal in the middle of the district over the Trebel lowlands to the border with the Mecklenburg Lake District in the south. The area is flat and undulating - the highest point is 38 m above sea level. NHN (near Franzburg).

history

In the 12./13. In the 19th century, the region was hardly populated and belonged to the mainland of the Principality of Rügen. In 1232, Prince of Rügen Wizlaw I approved the Cistercian order to build a monastery. The then newly created Neuenkamp Monastery was built by monks from the Kamp Monastery on the Lower Rhine. An abbey church was then built. The Neuenkamp monastery was replaced by a castle in 1535, and the abbey church by a castle church.

1587 was by the incumbent Pomeranian Duke Bogislaw XIII. the town of Franzburg was founded at the site of the former monastery.

Today's city of Franzburg has around 1800 inhabitants. Franzburg's main tourist attractions are the old town hall, the castle church and the 600 hectare Hellberge nature reserve .

The town of Richtenberg already existed before Neuenkamp was founded and was transferred to Neuenkamp when the monastery was founded. In Richtenberg the monks built a three-aisled hall church around 1400 , to which a steeple was added around 1500. Richtenberg has always been known for its grain distillery tradition, which continues to this day.

The place Velgast is characterized for the office today mainly by its rail connection to Hamburg, Rostock and Stralsund.
