history

In the past, the name Stahlbrode was referred to as “Stalbrode” (without an h) and even earlier as “Starbrode”. The latter name is derived from the Slavic designation stary = old and brod = ford , so together to "old ford".

Stahlbrode was first mentioned in documents in 1337, when Bertram von Gristow sold his shares in the local ferry station for 44 marks to the city and the Hospital of the Holy Spirit in Greifswald. In 1346 the von Slavestorp family also sold their shares in the town to the town and hospital. In 1384, Duke Wartislaw VI. his due to Greifswald and the hospital. So both owned the entire area and in 1418, Duke Wartislaw IX. confirm, including ownership of the other villages in the area.

During the visit of 1670 it was found:

  • 5 full farmers with 2 land hooves each
  • 3 kossats
  • 3 katen people

In 1687 the ferryman asked the city of Greifswald, who was the sole owner of the ferry, to help him get a large ferry boat, as his two boats were taken away without compensation during the Brandenburg War.

In 1715 the ferry house burned down due to a lightning strike. The new building cost 120 thaler. In 1749 a school was established in the village.

In 1809 the Kossatenstellen were dissolved and the lands were assigned to the peasant farms. After a survey and separation from 1838, the farms were to be rebuilt separately on their associated farms. The city supported with building materials and some services. That was already done by 1841. In 1845 the compulsory mill to Reinberg was lifted, but for the time being the compulsory forge to this place remained. In 1840 the two existing rental kats were broken off. So far they have served the linen weavers as living and working accommodation. In 1858 16 families lived from fishing, they owned 9 boats. The city of Greifswald was responsible for the fishing rights; the so-called water lease amounted to 1 thaler per year per fisherman.

Because of the ferry to Rügen, a stone railway from Reinberg to Stahlbrode was finally built in 1859. But in 1864 the ferry justice ended for Greifswald as the owner and with it the work for the ferryman. The ferry justice went to Glewitz on Rügen. The Stahlbroder ferryman became a farmer and innkeeper on the previous farm. He only had to give the Glewitz ferryman accommodation in the event of a storm.

The structure of the property in Stahlbrode was as follows in 1866:

  • Farm I - Vägler, Joachim - 292 acres - 560 thalers for a 12-year lease, the farm is 1.2 km northwest of the village
  • Farm II - Meyer, Christoph - 376 acres - 738 Thaler for a 12-year lease, the farm is 2.4 km west of the village
  • Farm III - Vägler, Johann - 304 acres - 315 Thaler for a 12-year lease, the farm is 1.6 km southwest of the village
  • Farm IV - Mohr, Albert - 624 acres - 472 Thaler for a 12-year lease, the farm is 1.1 km southwest of the village
  • Farm V - Vägler, Johann - 353 acres - 355 Thaler for a 12-year lease, the farm is 0.5 km south of the village
  • Ferry Station - Bunge - 141 acres - 0.1 miles east
  • Büdnerstellen - 5 Büdner each 1 - 2 acres in long lease
Chapel with cemetery

Stahlbrode was a farming village, a chapel and had a Schulzen. In 1862 the place had 287 inhabitants, in 1767 there were still 140. In 1866 Stahlbrode had 6 houses, 17 farm buildings, 8 cottages with 3 stables, a school and since 1852 a poor house. The chapel consists of a half-timbered building with a brick roof.

The official statistics of 1871 for Stahlbrode show: The place had 20 houses with 52 households, there were 274 inhabitants, in 1867 there were 266, all inhabitants belonged to the Protestant denomination.

The table from 1880 clearly shows the structure of the village. The decentralized courtyards were three-sided courtyards with a residential building, 2 larger farm buildings and two small sheds. There was also a small park at each courtyard. The farms were labeled “Gut” on the maps. The ferry station also had this structure. The ferry pier in 1880 was 130 meters long and massive. By 1920, a pier was built north of the ferry pier, which formed a compact port in the shape of an arch to the ferry pier; the ferry pier was reinforced even further.

After 1945 the place enlarged considerably. The western courtyard II was demolished and fell desolate. All other farms remained, they were all expanded. A large bungalow settlement and a campsite were built to the northwest of the town on the Sund coast.

Due to the increasing tourist traffic and the limited capacity of the Stralsund feeder to Rügen, Stahlbrode became increasingly important as a relief ferry. The ferry port was modernized. It is operated seasonally. The place is fully committed to tourism.

Stahlbrode was incorporated into Reinberg on July 1, 1950 .

On June 7, 2009, Reinberg merged with the communities of Behnkendorf , Brandshagen , Horst , Kirchdorf , Miltzow and Wilmshagen to form the new community of Sundhagen.
