history

The presence of the Romans is particularly evidenced by numerous finds of roof tiles.

The current location may have been rebuilt after the medieval Reconquista . Since 1151 at the latest, the place was called São Cristóvão de Rio Mau a separate community around an existing monastery. The name Rio Mau ( Portuguese for: bad river) goes back, according to local legends, to the Rio Este that runs here.

Rio Mau was initially a municipality belonging to Barcelos , later to Póvoa de Varzim . In the course of the numerous administrative reforms after the Liberal Revolution in 1820 and the subsequent Miguelistenkrieg (1832-1834) Rio Mau was finally incorporated in 1853 into the Vila do Conde district.

With the municipal reform in 2013 , the independent municipality of Rio Mau was dissolved and merged with Arcos to form the new municipality of Rio Mau e Arcos .
