Rita Borsellino (born June 2, 1945 in Palermo ; † August 15, 2018 there ) was an Italian politician from the Partito Democratico , who was involved in the fight against the mafia in Sicily and was considered one of the symbolic figures of the anti-mafia movement.

Life

She was born as the younger sister of the judge Paolo Borsellino . In 1967 she completed her pharmacy studies in Palermo and worked as a pharmacist in her father's pharmacy.

Borsellino's political career began when her brother, who was investigating the Mafia with Giovanni Falcone , was murdered on their behalf in 1992. In 1995 she founded Libera , an organization whose aim is to motivate the Sicilian population, especially young people, to take a stand against the Mafia. Borsellino was vice president of that organization.

In May 2006 she ran in the elections to the Sicilian regional parliament, but was defeated by Salvatore Cuffaro , who had been president since 2001, and became an opposition leader. Since the European elections in 2009 she was a member of the European Parliament . There she belonged to the social democratic group S&D .

As an EU parliamentarian, Borsellino was a member of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs and the Special Committee against Organized Crime, Corruption and Money Laundering and the Delegation for Relations with the Arabian Peninsula .

On October 30, 2011, Borsellino declared her willingness to run for the office of mayor of Palermo in 2012. However, on March 4, 2012, she lost the center-left party primaries to Fabrizio Ferrandelli , despite support from the PD leadership .

Borsellino was married and had three sons. Since 1998 she has also been chairwoman of the Associazione Piera Cutino - guarire dalla talassemia , a non-profit association for research into thalassemia diseases.
