Rivalry between the Toledo Rockets and Bowling Green Falcons

Location of Universities in Ohio

The rivalry between the Toledo Rockets and the Bowling Green Falcons is a rivalry for the football teams of the Mid-American Conference members Bowling Green State University (BGSU) and the University of Toledo (UT). She is considered one of the strongest in college football . Since 1948, both teams have played a game against each other every year. The two universities are just 25 miles away from each other on Interstate 75 (I-75). The Bowling Green Falcons and the Toledo Rockets exchanged two trophies: the Peace Pipe Trophy (1980–2010) and the Battle of I-75 Trophy (2011 – present).

history

The rivalry between the UT and the BGSU goes back to 1919. The games were (and still are) characterized by a passionate fan base and hatred for the respective opponent. In 1935, fans of the Toledo Rockets rioted after a 63-0 shutout win, which meant that the two teams did not meet again until 1948. It was the third straight win for Toledo, beating Bowling Green 111-7 overall. Bowling Greens athletics director was forced to recognize the clear superiority of Toledo in football and therefore broke off all sporting relationships. Before the clash again on the football field, the resumption of sporting relationships in basketball began. The 1948 game ended in a 21-6 win for Bowling Green. The following four games ended with alternating victories of both teams, so that one could speak of a balanced playing strength. The rivalry's longest winning streak began in 1955 when Bowling Green was victorious for twelve years in a row. Only the 1967 team of the Rockets ended the series with a 33-0 victory and brought the team their first victory in the Mid-American Conference in the same year .

trophies

Peace Pipe Trophy

1948, the smoking of a 1.8 m long was used as a peace sign Friedenspfeife (engl. Peace pipe ) inserted into the first half. The pipe was then handed over to the winning team, which kept the pipe until the next meeting. The tradition was interrupted in 1969 when the pipe was stolen from the offices of the University of Toledo. She was never found again and the thief was never caught.

In 1980, based on the old tradition, a metallic miniature peace pipe was introduced as a trophy, which was made by the former Rockets player Frank Kralik. The peace pipe is attached to a small cup on which the logos of the two football teams are depicted.

The award of the Peace Pipe Trophy was suspended after the 2010 game. The universities agreed to introduce a new trophy after criticism from Native Americans. The symbolism of the peace pipe was taken into account, as well as the NCAA's suggestion to remove symbols and nicknames associated with indigenous people. The Peace Pipe Trophy has been on display in the University of Toledo's trophy cabinet since then, as Toledo won the last game for the trophy.

Battle of I-75 Trophy

In 2011 the two university teams started playing for the Battle of I-75 Trophy . This was sponsored by Taylor Kia Automotive Group and replaced the Peace Pipe Trophy . The Battle of I-75 Trophy was designed by Jeff Artz, who also designed the Fred Biletnikoff Award . However, the trophy was not completed in time for the first match, which is why it was only ceremonially awarded for the first time in 2012. Toledo has won all the Battle of I-75 Trophy games so far.
