The River Leam at Leamington Spa

The River Leam ( ˈlɛm ) is a river in Warwickshire . It flows into the Warwickshire Avon between Warwick and Leamington Spa .

Surname

In Merriam-Webster's Geographical Dictionary , "River Leame" is offered as an alternate spelling. The meaning goes back to the old English "leman" or "lemin", "the elm tree" or swampy river. The town of Leamington Spa takes its name from the river.

geography

The Leam rises at Hellidon on Arbury Hill in Northamptonshire . It rises from the same aquifer as the River Nene and the River Cherwell, which ultimately run in very different directions. The Leam runs in arcs that stretch far to the east, in a northerly direction and takes in many streams from the east and west. At Braunston it forms the border between Northamptonshire and Warwickshire for a while. There it is also crossed by the Grand Union Canal ( ). From then on it runs, still in large loops, but more and more to the west. It passes the Toft Lakes fish farm and runs through the grounds of the town of Rugby and takes up the River Itchen to the northwest of Marton . It winds in four large loops to the west and then south, where it almost meets the Grand Union Canal again. It also enters the residential area of Leamington Spa, where it is bordered by a number of parks and then flows into the Avon halfway between Leamington Spa and Warwick. Ultimately, its waters flow through the Severn into the Bristol Channel.

Tributaries

The major tributaries are Rains Brook , River Itchen , Pingle Brook , River Stowe, and Radford Brook .
