On the northwest side of the mountain, the remains of a wall and ditch system from the late 17th century can be seen. The fortifications run in the Roßberg area from the Schanzenhäusle over the Ringelschanze to the Roßbergschanze . Between the Ringel- and the Roßbergschanze there are continuous linear structures with several triangular bastions . Fighting took place near Breitnau in 1690, but the entrenchments lost their military importance by the beginning of the 18th century. The defenses were part of the baroque defenses in the Black Forest .

The Naturfreundehaus Breitnau is located directly at the Roßbergschanze ( location ).
