Roßgärter Gate

The Roßgärter Tor ( Russian Росгартенские ворота) is one of the fortification buildings in Königsberg at the end of the Roßgarten (Königsberg) .

history

The gate on Cranzer Allee on the arterial road to Cranz is mentioned as early as 1785 together with the “Roßgärtschen Ziegelei” located in front of the gate. In 1820, five goods in front of the gate are named, which were parish for the Altrossgärtner Church . The structure that is still preserved was built by Wilhelm Stürmer on the first wall in 1852–1855 . The passage was in the middle of the gate, with casemates on both sides that used to house the gate guards. On the inside of the city, the passage through a forward building is covered for all-round defense. On the outside there was a moat with a drawbridge . The casemates had outward loopholes and inside window. There is an observation area with parapet over the entire gate. Two half-towers rise on both sides, in between, symmetrically arranged, the so-called arcades - two rows of arches that are the same size and shape and are supported at regular intervals on hexagonal columns. The gate is decorated with ornaments and sandstone flowers. On both sides of the city-side passage there are high reliefs by Gerhard von Scharnhorst and August von Gneisenau .

During the Battle of Königsberg , the last remnants of the Wehrmacht defended the Rossgärter Tor including the Dohnaturm for one day after the surrender, until April 10, 1945. In the post-war period, the gate was initially used as a warehouse. Today it houses a café and a fish restaurant.
