Roald is the Nordic version of the old German “Rodewald”, composed of the Old High German “[h] ruom” / “[h] ruod” for “fame” and the old high German “walten” for “rule”. The old Icelandic Egils saga mentions a Hroald as Jarl about Firdafylke in western Norway at the time of Harald Fairhair .
