Robert "Rob" John Tognoni (born October 30, 1960 in Ulverstone , Tasmania ) is an Australian blues guitarist. His feeling for blues rock is particularly evident through his sophisticated playing technique. In his game he combines classic rock elements such as power chords and driving riffs in the style of the rock group AC / DC with the blues . His music is particularly influenced by musicians such as BB King and Jimi Hendrix as well as the aforementioned band AC / DC.

Life

Tognoni is the son of an Italian immigrant. His father died in 1974 after a traffic accident. In the following years, Tognoni learned to play the guitar intensively. After leaving school in 1976, he made a living from various odd jobs.

In 1983, a year after Leonnie married, his daughter was born. Tognoni, whose style had developed towards the blues, formed his first band with the Skidrow Boys and toured with them through Tasmania. In 1985 the band broke up and Tognoni moved to Melbourne with his family . There he joined a cover band . After another move to near Queensland in 1986, he founded the band Outlaws, where he also appeared as a singer for the first time. The band is instantly successful. At the 20th Annual Queensland Rock Awards, they were honored in the categories of “Best Band”, “Best Guitarist” and “Best Drummer”. In 1989 Tognoni's family moved back to Melbourne with the band. The Outlaws, who renamed themselves The Desert Cats in 1990, toured Australia with various other bands and played with musicians such as Lonnie Mack , Joe Walsh and Roy Buchanan . Eventually the band broke up, an attempt to revive Tognoni in 1992 with a different line-up failed. He returned to Queensland with his family in 1993 and romped through restaurants and bars to keep himself afloat financially.

During this time he received an offer from an old friend in Melbourne to record a few songs in his recording studio. Tognoni sent the resulting demo tapes to Dave Hole , an Australian blues musician with whom he had been in brief correspondence two years earlier when he congratulated him on his success in the USA. This mediated a contact to the record label Provogue / Mascot Records in the Netherlands, from which Tognoni received a contract. He published the first four of his CDs with Provogue and his tours through Europe made him an internationally recognized blues musician.

In 2002, Rob Tognoni founded his own label Electric Renegade and released two studio albums there. The live recording Shakin 'the Devil's Hand - Live was released under the French label Dixiefrog. Tognoni has been playing with German musicians since 2003, with Slawek Semeniuk on 5-string bass guitar and Gerry Reynders on drums since 2018.

On the occasion of the wedding of the Danish Crown Prince, Crown Prince Frederik, and the Australian Mary Donaldson , Rob Tognoni made an appearance at the Rock 'n' Royal Festival in Copenhagen in 2004 , in front of 45,000 spectators in the stadium and 2.5 million television viewers in Denmark alone. He played the Australian national anthem in the "guitar duel" with Jacob Binzer from DAD , who played the Danish anthem.
