Robert, 4th Earl of Strathearn

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Robert, 4th Earl of Strathearn (* around 1180 ; † before August 1244 ), was a Scottish nobleman .

Life

His father was Gille Brigte, 3rd Earl of Strathearn . His mother was most likely Mathilda, daughter of William d'Aubigny, 3rd Earl of Arundel , to whom his father was married for the first time. With his death in 1223 he came into his inheritance and took on the title of Earl of Strathearn .

Together with his brothers, he was mentioned for the first time as a witness on the deed of foundation with which his father founded the monastery of Inchaffray on his lands around 1199; and until the death of his father he was also present as a witness at some other donations. As early as 1219 he confirmed all of his father's donations to the monastery as a possible successor to his father; he undertook to allow the monks an undisturbed existence should his inheritance fall.

During the great political events of that time he appeared only once: on September 25, 1237 he was in York with King Alexander II ; his signature was found with the witnesses of the certification on the contract with which Alexander II. and the English King Heinrich III. established the border between the two kingdoms. When the treaty was ratified in August 1244, his successor signed.

Robert was married once, but neither his wife's name nor the wedding date are recorded. There were at least five children from this marriage:

  • Maol Íosa ( Malise , † 1271), heir and later 5th Earl
  • Gilbert († 1268)
  • Hugh († 1290), prior of Inchaffray Abbey, founded by his grandfather.
  • Annabella († 1296)
  • Mary († 1284)

A possible sixth son, Fergus, is mentioned in a donation around 1234. However, this can also be due to errors in the interpretation of Latin abbreviations on the document; then Robert's brother Fergus († 1247) would be meant.
