action

Jenny and her husband Paul live in a house with their son Gene. Jenny fires her old housekeeper Agatha after they notice that she becomes more and more senile as she gets older and that her work performance also suffers as a result.

Just before Agatha leaves, she gives Gene a doll named Robert and tells him that she is now his new friend and that he will always protect him. Jenny tells Agatha that she is sorry about the termination, but she leaves the house with the words: "It will be."

From now on strange things are happening in the house. There is sugar scattered in the kitchen and a picture of Jenny painted is splattered with paint. At first she tries to convince herself that her son may be playing a prank on them and tells him not to.

After Jenny and Paul hired a new housekeeper, the doll pushed her down the stairs and was seriously injured in the process, the situation became increasingly threatening. However, Paul does not want to admit all of this and claims that his already mentally ailing wife is simply done with her nerves.

Later, Jenny finds the word: “Die” (German: “die”) on the mirror in the bedroom, which was written with her red lipstick. The doll holds this in her hand after she has gone to her son's room and asks him if he was the cause.

A few days later, Paul and Jenny spend an evening out together, but leave a nanny with their son. After they return, they find the house with the front door open and the nanny has disappeared. However, Gene is sleeping in his room. Angry, Jenny tries to reach the nanny's parents, who tell her that they are dead.

In a flashback you can see Robert chasing them to their house and finally killing them.

Jenny then speaks to her son again and learns that Robert is usually quite funny, but can sometimes get very angry if he doesn't feel loved. She also learns from Gene that Robert can speak, but only carried out the said actions to him and himself. After the conversation, Jenny takes the doll to the garden shed and then visits Agatha's house.

This has since passed away, but Jenny finds clues to the previous house residents and then goes to them as well. After some hesitation, they report that the doll contains a ghost of a boy named Robert, who was killed by his father. The boy had the doll in his arms. Later this passed into the possession of cousin Roberts, via what it then came to Agatha, who conjured the spirit of the boy with black magic and locked it in the doll.

They advise her to return home as soon as possible and destroy the doll, which Jenny takes to heart. Meanwhile, Paul looks at the pictures painted by his wife, which show gloomy visions. In the evening, his son says goodbye when he goes to bed with the words "Goodbye Dad" instead of the usual "Goodnight".

A short time later, Robert hits Paul on the head with a baseball bat and collapses.

When Jenny later arrives at the house, she finds Paul lying on the floor and then tries to get into Gene's room. The door is locked, however, and Gene doesn't answer his mother's calls either. Meanwhile, Robert sneaks up on Jenny from behind and wants to kill her as well, but Paul, who has now regained consciousness, can apparently kill the doll with a knife in the stomach. Now both get into Gene's room, who stares at the doll in shock.

Three weeks later, everyday life seems to have returned and Paul wants to take a bath while Jenny continues to paint her pictures. Suddenly she hears Paul calling her name and runs to the bathroom. On the stairs she sees Gene in the blood-splattered clothes of Robert with a knife. The film ends with this picture.
