Robert Alexander Hillingford

Robert Alexander Hillingford (born January 28, 1828 in Clapham (London) , † 1904 in London ) was a British painter from the Düsseldorf School .

Life

As a child, Hillingford received art lessons in Boulogne-sur-Mer . From 1841 to 1845 he studied painting at the Düsseldorf Art Academy under Karl Ferdinand Sohn , as well as in Munich , Rome and Florence . In Rome he was a member of the German Artists' Association from 1845 to 1866 , and took an active part in its "Cervaro Festival". He recorded the festival of 1856 in an oil painting that he created together with Charles Quaedvlieg . His representation of the "Schillerfeier" of the German Artists' Association appeared in 1859 in the Illustrirten Zeitung . On June 23, 1858, he married the model Chiara Cervi-Bucilli. A painting from its Roman period was exhibited in Saint Petersburg in 1859 . In 1864 he returned to England. In 1866 he had his first London exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts , where he subsequently exhibited regularly, as well as in other galleries. The St. Petersburg Art Academy recognized him with an honorary membership.

Hillingford was a genre and history painter . After he had primarily painted motifs of Italian folk life in Italy, he turned to the "historical genre" in his home country. Scenes from the Wars of Liberation and other wars were his specialty, with particular attention being paid to the costumes of the characters to be portrayed.
