Robert Bréchon (* 1920 ; † July 30, 2012 in Le Pecq ) was a French poet and Lusitanist .

life and work

Bréchon passed the Agrégation in the subject Lettres in 1942 and was a high school teacher in Brazil, England, Egypt and Yugoslavia. The three years as director of the French grammar school in Rio de Janeiro and (from 1962 to 1968 as the successor to Pierre Hourcade ) as head of the Institut français in Lisbon (also cultural attaché of the French embassy) were of particular importance for his Lusitanist literary criticism . In Portugal he had the poet António Ramos Rosa as a friend, made numerous long-term contacts and familiarized himself with the work of Fernando Pessoa , which Pessoa's discoverer Armand Guibert (1906–1990) said he had mediated. Bréchon dedicated five books to Pessoa and published his work (translated into French) in nine volumes. He also wrote about fellow poets Henri Michaux and Michel Leiris , as well as about surrealism .

Bréchon was a Knight of the Legion of Honor and Grand Cross in the Order of Infante Dom Henrique .
