Robert D'Oyly

Robert D'Oyly (also Robert D'Oyley de Liseaux , Robert Doyley , Robert de Oiley , Robert d'Oilly , Robert D'Oyley and Roberti De Oilgi ) was a Norman nobleman who was accompanied by William the Conqueror when he conquered England . He was the son of Walter D'Oyly and the older brother of Nigel D'Oyly .

He married Ealdgyth, the daughter of Wigod , the Anglo-Saxon Lord of Wallingford , after whose death William appointed him the new Lord of Wallingford and commissioned him between 1067 and 1071 to fortify Wallingford Castle .

Robert D'Oyly is also the builder of Oxford Castle .

He was the uncle of Robert Doyley , the son of his brother Nigel, the founder of Osney Priory in Oxford .

His descendant, Henry D'Oyly, was one of the feudal lords of the Magna Carta .
