Robert Emmett Lee

Robert Emmett Lee (born October 12, 1868 in Pottsville , Schuylkill County , Pennsylvania , †  November 19, 1916 there ) was an American politician . Between 1911 and 1915 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Robert Lee attended the public schools in his home country and then completed an apprenticeship as a blacksmith. He later worked in commerce in Pottsville. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In 1905 he was district treasurer. In 1908 he ran unsuccessfully for Congress . In the congressional elections of 1910 he was then elected in the twelfth constituency of Pennsylvania to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Republican Alfred Buckwalter Garner on March 4, 1911 .

After being re-elected, Lee was able to serve two legislative terms there until March 3, 1915. During this time he was chairman of the Committee on Mileage . In addition, the 16th and 17th amendments were ratified. In 1914 and 1916 Robert Lee competed unsuccessfully to remain in or return to Congress. After serving in the US House of Representatives, he resumed his previous activities. He died in Pottsville on November 19, 1916.
