Robert Erbelding
Robert Erbelding (born January 9, 1891 in Otterbach (West Palatinate) , † March 4, 1965 in Waldmohr ) was a German painter and graphic artist.
Life
Robert Erbelding grew up in Otterbach (West Palatinate) . From 1909 to 1912 he studied law, economics and languages in Cologne . He then worked as a foreign correspondent in the metal industry. In 1914 he volunteered for military service , where, as an observer with the aviators, he had, among other things, the task of drawing enemy positions while flying over them. From 1921 to 1925 he studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy , where he became a master student of Willy Spatz . In 1929 Erbelding moved to Ludwigshafen am Rhein , where he married his second wife Hildegard, née Schaefer (1908–1985). Both lived in Munich from 1933 to 1935 before moving to Waldmohr. In 1939 the artist volunteered for military service , from which he returned in 1945 with bad health.

Robert Erbelding was only artistically active to a limited extent after 1945 as a result of his war injuries, which is why the main part of his oeuvre was created in the twenties and thirties. In addition to oil paintings and watercolors , he mainly made etchings and charcoal drawings. His subjects were the landscape and the people. In 1937 he produced a series of charcoal drawings depicting children and working adults, which, in the opinion of the art historian Jürgen Ecker, are among the high point of Erbelding's work and "in their expressiveness [...] one of the most interesting art expressions of the thirties in the Palatinate". The estate of Robert and Hildegard Erbelding is administered by Katharina and Anton Büdel (Waldmohr).
