Robert Havell the Younger
Robert Havell the Younger (born November 25, 1793 in Reading , † November 11, 1878 in Tarrytown (New York) ) was an English engraver and painter who provided most of the printing plates for John James Audubon's important natural history work The Birds of America .
The Reading Havell family, an English branch of the widespread Norman Hauteville family , produced a great number of notable painters, printmakers , writers, publishers, teachers and musicians. In terms of printmaking, some, including Robert Havell, were leaders in the aquatint technique. Havell supplied all printing plates except for the first ten for the important natural history work The Birds of America published by John James Audubon between 1827 and 1838 and, from today's perspective, had a significant artistic contribution to its success.
Havell and Auduburn became friends during their long collaboration, and in 1839 Havell went to America at Auduburn's invitation. He first lived in Brooklyn and later moved to Tarrytown, New York, where he lived from 1857 until his death. Havell continued to work in the field of aquatins and city panoramas, but devoted most of his time to painting landscape views in the Hudson River valley . During this time he was a member of the Hudson River School , a group of American landscape painters.
