Robert Higgins

Robert Higgins (* 1925 ) is a retired American weightlifter . He became world featherweight champion in 1947 .

Career

"Bobby" Higgins is of Irish descent. He began lifting weights as a teenager in the Hoffmeisters athletic club in Indianapolis . At the age of 17 he made his debut at the US championships in 1942 and came in 4th place in the bantam weight with 200 kg (67.5-60-72.5). Even then, his strength was shown in the two-armed pushing, while he had weaknesses in the two-armed pushing.

In 1943 and 1944 he finished 3rd in the US bantamweight championships. In 1945 and 1946 he did his military service and could not take part in these championships. In 1947, however, he made a comeback. Now starting in featherweight, he finished this year with 297.5 kg (100-85-112.5) behind Emerick Ishikawa , who came to 300 kg, US runner-up. He was therefore nominated for the World Championships that year, which took place in Philadelphia. He presented himself there in even better shape, came in featherweight in the Olympic three-way fight to 310 kg (105-90-115) and was with this performance before Nam Su-il from South Korea and Emerick Ishikawa world champion.

In 1948 he was unlucky at the US Championships. There he managed 97.5 kg in pushing and 90 kg in snatch. In pushing, however, he did not succeed in a valid attempt, so that he remained without a three-way battle and ultimately only took 5th place with 187.5 kg. He could therefore not take part in the US Olympic elimination and was not nominated for the Olympic Games in London.

After 1948 Robert Higgins was no longer listed in any results list, so it can be assumed that he ended his weightlifting career at the age of 23.
