Emerick Ishikawa
Emerick Kotaro Ishikawa (born October 23, 1920 in Lahaina , Hawaii , † November 26, 2006 in Pearl City , Hawaii) was an American weightlifter .
Career
Emerick Ishikawa began lifting weights as a teenager in Hawaii. Since he promised better training conditions on the American west coast, he went first to Seattle in 1940 and then to Sacramento . A short time later he ended up in a detention center for Americans of Japanese descent in Tule Lake , California . In this camp, in which Tamio Kono , who later became Olympic champion , was interned, he was able to continue lifting weights, although not under the ideal conditions he had imagined.
After his internment was lifted, he became a member of the York Barbell Club in York , PA and later the Yacos Gym in Detroit , Wed. 1944, he was so far in terms of performance that he could participate in the US championships (AAU Championships). He won the bantamweight title with 282.5 kg in the Olympic three-way fight. He won this title in 1945 in bantamweight and in 1946 and 1947 in featherweight . In 1948 he became runner-up in featherweight.
Emerick Ishikawa's international career began in 1946 when he took part in the World Cup in Paris . He achieved a featherweight 295 kg there and came in 6th place. At the World Championships in Philadelphia in 1947, he increased in the Olympic three-way fight to 302.5 kg and won the bronze medal in the featherweight division . World champion was his young compatriot Robert Higgins , whom he had defeated at the US championship that year.
1948 Emerick Ishikawa qualified for a start in the Olympic Games in London . He came there in the featherweight in the Olympic three-way fight to 307.5 kg and came in 6th place.
Emerick Ishikawa then returned to Hawaii and worked as a graphic illustrator at Hickam Air Force Base in Oahu . He also trained young weightlifters in the Nuuaru YMCA for 33 years .
