Nam Su-il ( Hangeul : 남수 일 ; * June 26, 1912 ; † May 24, 1972 ) was a South Korean weightlifter .

Career

In 1940 Tokyo was slated to host the Summer Olympics. For this reason , great efforts were made in Japan , which also included Korea at the time, to make weightlifting popular there. The first successes became apparent at the end of the 1930s. In weightlifting, it was mostly Korean athletes who were trained in Japan and achieved world standards. One of them was Nam Su-il, whose name was Japaneseized as Nan Juitsu . In 1938 the world championship in weightlifting took place in Vienna , at which no Japanese athletes were at the start. There were no world championships from 1939 to 1945, and the 1940 Olympic Games in Tokyo were also canceled due to the Second World War. It was very unfortunate for Nam Su-il that he could not take part in any international championships for this reason, because those were his best years. This is proven by the world records he had set. He achieved his first world record as a featherweight in Yokohama in 1938 when he managed to push 97.5 kg with both arms. In 1939 he increased this world record in Osaka to 105 kg. In 1940 he achieved a new unofficial world record in Tokyo featherweight with 335 kg in the Olympic three-way fight. World records in the all-around competitions were not held at that time.

With these achievements, Nam Su-il would have had a good chance of being at the very front at the 1940 Olympic Games or, if they had been held, also in 1944. Kim Su-il, who lived in Korea after Korean independence, had to wait until 1947 before he could take part in an international championship, the 1947 World Cup in Philadelphia . Meanwhile, 36 years old but he was not as powerful as in the years 1938 to 1940. He reached in Philadelphia featherweight but at least a three-way battle capacity of 307.5 kg, with whom he behind the Americans Robert Higgins came 2nd .

In 1948 he started at the 1948 Olympic Games in London and achieved an excellent 4th place in featherweight with 307.5 kg (92.5-92.5-122.5). Also at the Olympic Games in Helsinki in 1952, now at the age of forty, he competed again. He scored 300 kg (90-90-120) in the Olympic three-way fight and came in 11th place.

Then he ended his career.
