Lembit Kurvits (born May 15, 1954 in Mammaste , Põlva municipality , † February 20, 2017 in Keila ) was an Estonian poet .

Life

Lembit Kurvits had been in a children's home since he was 13 and attended various schools until he was 16. From 1970 to 1975 he was a laborer and electrician in various positions. He then took up distance learning and was temporarily employed as a librarian, educator and proofreader. For a while he tried his hand at being a freelance writer. Since 1996 he has been in psychiatric hospitals repeatedly and for long periods of time because of mental problems. In 1997, he was sentenced to several years in prison after engaging in violence with his ex-wife.

Kurvits also wrote children's literature and has been a member of the Estonian Writers' Union since 1991 .

plant

Lembit Kurvits launched his first literary attempts in the 1970s and published his first volume of poetry in 1981. It was published as part of a series by the Estonian state publisher, in which Doris Kareva , Rein Raud and Mari Vallisoo also published their debut collections. Kurvits' poetry, however, has from the beginning been associated with earlier Estonian poetry, and here especially with Juhan Liiv , especially since his poetry often contains a melancholy undertone. This mood was also maintained in the following collections, some of which are also characterized by psychological problems. Kurvits thus stands in the tradition of Juhan Liiv, Marie Heiberg and Jaan Oks and, according to one critic, gives the "oppressed, neglected and forgotten" a voice.
