Robert Seiwald
Robert J. Seiwald (born March 26, 1925 in Fort Morgan (Colorado) ) is an American chemist.
Seiwald received his bachelor's degree from the University of San Francisco in 1949 and received his PhD in organic chemistry from St. Louis University in 1954 . From 1957 until his retirement in 1989 he was Professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of San Francisco.
Together with Joseph Burckhalter, he developed fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC), a dye for the identification of specific antibodies that was widely used in the diagnosis of infectious diseases and cancer ( immunofluorescence ).
In 1995 he was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame with Burckhalter .
