Robert L. Folk

Robert L. Folk (born September 30, 1925 in Shaker Heights, Cleveland , Ohio - † June 4, 2018 ) was an American geoscientist . From 1953 to 1988 he worked at the University of Texas at Austin , where he held several chairs in geological sciences. During this time, Folk has received two awards for work in the field of petrology . In 1959 he proposed a nomenclature for the classification of carbonate rocks , which, with minor modifications, is essentially still used today. After finishing his teaching activities, he devoted himself completely to science. In 2000 he received the Penrose Medal from the Geological Society of America .

In the early 1990s, Folk discovered nanobacteria in a rock from Viterbo (Italy) .
