Robert Lachmann

Robert Lachmann (born November 28, 1892 in Berlin , † May 8, 1939 in Jerusalem ) was a German ethnomusicologist , librarian and orientalist . He is one of the co-founders of the Berlin School for Comparative Musicology .

Life

During the First World War he was an interpreter in a POW camp with soldiers from Africa. From 1927 to 1933 he worked in the music department of the Prussian State Library and during this time undertook research trips to the Middle East. In 1929 he researched the music of the Arabized Muslim Berbers and the local Jewish community on the Tunisian island of Djerba . Lachmann was a student of Johannes Wolf .

After the National Socialists came to power, Lachmann, who was of Jewish origin, lost his position at the Prussian State Library and finally emigrated to Palestine in April 1935 . At the invitation of Judah Leon Magnes , he took up a position at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem , where he founded the Center and Archive for Oriental Music, which was particularly dedicated to Jewish music.
