Robert Luterbacher (born September 8, 1846 in Grenchen , † December 20, 1912 there , entitled to live in Grenchen) was a Swiss politician ( SP ).

Life

Robert Luterbacher came from a middle-class family, graduated from the Solothurn Cantonal School and then did a commercial apprenticeship. He ran a flourishing wine shop in Grenchen. Despite this background, he joined the Social Democratic Party of Switzerland . In 1890 he was a co-founder of the SP of the Canton of Solothurn. From 1896 to 1912 he was a member of the Cantonal Council of Solothurn. In 1899 he was the first social democrat to become a municipal mayor in Grenchen.

His term of office was double-edged. On the one hand, he proved to be a generous, private patron of various charitable projects of the community - with a good financial background. On the other hand, the global political age of imperialism at that time obviously rubbed off on Robert Luterbacher: around 1908 he had a «Hotel de ville» (town house) built for the community, which at that time had only around 5500 inhabitants , which is still considered proud by today's urban standards can. This was despite the fact that Grenchen had had an acute desire for its own hospital since the 1870s and felt that it was clearly discriminated against in relation to the main town of Solothurn, which is 10 kilometers away .
