Robert Malaval (born July 29, 1937 in Nice , France , † August 8 or 9, 1980 in Paris ) was a French avant-garde painter , draftsman , sculptor and relief artist .

life and work

At the age of 16, the self-taught Robert Malaval discovered painting, particularly Vincent van Gogh and surrealism . From 1954 to 1960 he had various jobs that had nothing to do with art, after he had previously undertaken an "initiation trip " and had returned to Paris in 1953 ( "Return to Earth" ). In 1958 he lived in the Alpes-Maritimes department , where he created a series of landscapes in sombre colors.

He had his first solo exhibition in 1961 at the Alphonse Chave Gallery in Venice and in 1963 in Paris. From 1961 to 1965 he produced a series of works, the “White Food” cycle , which stated that he was stimulated to do so by natural phenomena. The cycle consisted of over 120 reliefs and sculptures and 130 drawings. The reliefs and sculptures were largely made of paper mache , monochrome white, like large white food (1962, Center Georges Pompidou Paris). In 1976 he exhibited at the Biennale de Paris and in 1968 he was represented with 10 works, mainly ink drawings , at the 4th documenta in Kassel .

Robert Malaval committed suicide in Paris on the night of August 8th to 9th, 1980 .
