Robert Maxwell, 5th Lord Maxwell

Robert Maxwell, 5th Lord Maxwell (* 1510 - 13 September 1552 in Dumfries ), was a Scottish nobleman .

Life

He was the eldest son and heir of Robert Maxwell, 4th Lord Maxwell from his marriage to Janet Douglas, daughter of William Douglas, Laird of Drumlanrig.

Together with his father and brother John, he became the keeper of Lochmaben Castle on February 14, 1543 , and on December 19, 1544 he was appointed "Warden of the West Marches" in place of his father. In 1545 he was captured in this capacity in a raid-like action against the residents of Stranleheugh called hot rod , taken prisoner to England and only released in 1549 in exchange for Thomas Palmer. His appointment as "Warden of the West Marches" was renewed on March 29, 1550, on August 5 of the same year he took over the inheritance and the successor of his late father. In 1551 and subsequently until his death on September 13, 1552, he was a member of the Privy Council under Queen Maria .

On July 25, 1530, with the approval of King James V , he married Lady Beatrix Douglas, who was then underage, a daughter of James Douglas, 3rd Earl of Morton from his marriage to the illegitimate daughter of King Jacob IV, Lady Katherine Stewart. With her he had two sons:
