Robert McWade junior (born January 25, 1872 in Buffalo , New York , † January 19, 1938 in Culver City , California ) was an American theater and film actor.

Life

Robert McWade Jr. was born as the son of the well-known theater actor of the same name (1835-1913), who was particularly successful in the role of Rip Van Winkle . His older brother was the character actor Edward McWade (1865-1943), who played between 1919 and 1944 in over 130 films. McWade followed his family into the acting business and made his Broadway debut in November 1903 in A Japanese Nightingale . He is said to have made his breakthrough in 1909 with the drama The Fourth Estate . By 1927, McWade starred in nearly 40 plays on Broadway, making him one of the busiest performers there. McWade made his film debut as early as 1924, but - like many other theater actors - he did not appear regularly in films until the beginning of the sound film in the late 1920s.

Robert McWade was seen in supporting roles in particular for Warner Bros. and often embodied grumpy, but lovable authority figures. Mostly only seen for a few scenes, he is said to have received around $ 800 a week, which was a high sum for a supporting actor at the time. He had major roles in the western Pioneers of the Wild West (1931) and in the drama People in the Hotel (1932), both productions each winning the Oscar for Best Picture of the Year. McWade's last of over 80 films was Clarence Brown's drama Of Human Hearts (1938) . Just seconds after completing his final scene alongside James Stewart , the 65-year-old suffered a heart attack and died instantly. Apparently his last words were "Yes, that's my final scene".

Robert McWade is buried in Rosehill Cemetery, Chicago . His son was the actor Robert McWade Jr. (1911-1992).
