Robert Morison

Robert Morison (* 1620 in Aberdeen , † November 10, 1683 in London ) was a Scottish botanist and doctor . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Morison ".

Life

Robert Morison completed his training in Aberdeen , where he received his doctorate in philosophy in 1638. He was interested in botany and medicine and began to occupy himself with these areas professionally.

In 1648 he acquired the title of Doctor of Medicine in Angers . On the recommendation of the royal botanist Vespasien Robin in 1650 he became administrator of the gardens of Jean-Baptiste Gaston, Duke of Orléans in Blois . During this time he visited some French areas in search of new and rare plants .

In 1660, after the death of the Duke of Orléans, he was invited to England by Charles II , who gave him the title of "Royal Physician" and appointed him Royal Professor of Botany.

In 1669 he was appointed professor of botany at Oxford University and shortly thereafter elected a member of the Royal College of Physicians .

Robert Morison died on November 10, 1683 as a result of an accident that he had suffered the day before.

Honor taxon

Charles Plumier named the plant genus Morisona from the caper family (Capparaceae) in his honor . Carl von Linné later took over this name.
