Robert Norman

Robert Norman ( bl. 1560–1596) was an English sailor , compass maker and scientist. Among other things, he dealt with magnetism .

Life

Norman went to sea for a long time.

He eventually settled in London and made instruments.

Like Georg Hartmann (1544), he was concerned with the fact that the compass needle was not horizontal. With related knowledge about the inclination discovered by Hartmann, he also laid the foundation for the later work of William Gilbert . In addition, Norman constructed the first inclination busole .

On the moon, the Norman crater was named after him. He is also the namesake for Norman Peak in Antarctica.
