Robert Peenemaa

Robert Peenemaa (born August 1 . Jul / 14 August 1903 greg. In Mustmätta today Landsgemeinde Lüganuse , Ida-Viru County , Estonia ; †  17th October 1949 ) was an Estonian violinist.

Life and music

Robert Peenemaa received his first violin lessons from his father August Peenemaa. He quickly became known as a child prodigy . In 1911 he went to Russia and was taught at the St. Petersburg Conservatory at the age of nine , where he studied violin until 1920, with Johannes Nalbandjan among others .

With the independence of Estonia he returned to his homeland. In the 1920s, Peenemaa was one of the most famous violinists in the country. He played numerous solo pieces and appeared as a soloist with several symphony orchestras. From 1927 to 1931 he taught at the higher music school in Tartu , South Estonia , of which he was director. In 1929/30 and from 1935 to 1940 Peenemaa directed the music school in Valga .

During the Second World War and the occupation of Estonia, Peenemaa withdrew from public life. He lived on his parents' farm in Mustmätta, the Reinu-Jaani talu . He died there in 1949. Robert Peenemaa is buried in the Lüganuse cemetery.

Private life

Robert Peenemaa was married to the Estonian pianist Betsy Roolaid.
