Robert Schaab (born February 28, 1817 in Rötha near Leipzig, † March 18, 1887 in Leipzig ) was a German organist and musicologist .

life and work

After his first job in 1834 at the Borna city school , he became a teacher in Lindenau in 1835 , from 1843 to 1853 at the school in Anger and then a public school teacher in Leipzig. There he worked as an organist at the Johanniskirche from 1878 until his death .

Schaab was a student of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and EF Becker and stood out primarily through numerous transcriptions of orchestral works for piano and organ . Its aesthetic was conservative and was mostly based on the original. When Schaab transcribed the symphonic poem “Orpheus” by Franz Liszt (1854) for organ in 1860, the composer did not like it. Liszt and Alexander Wilhelm Gottschalg then revised the arrangement, added middle parts and changed the ending, resulting in a new version.
