Robert Scherer (born April 12, 1900 in Aachen , † March 2, 1967 in Krefeld ) was a German iron and steel engineer .

Life

Robert Scherer studied metallurgy at RWTH Aachen University from 1919 . During his studies he became a member of the Rheno-Borussia Aachen gymnastics association . He received his doctorate in 1925 with his dissertation The determination of oxygen in iron by residue analysis . Immediately afterwards, Scherer took over the management of the research institute at the Reinhold Becker steel works in Willich . In 1932 he moved to Deutsche Edelstahlwerke AG (DEW) in Krefeld, where he was responsible for quality in the entire production program of all plants. In 1937 he became director and in 1942 board member for technology. He also had at the TH Hannover habilitation .

After the Second World War , Scherer completed his habilitation at RWTH Aachen University. After the re-establishment of the DEW 1951 had in Krefeld Scherer through the use of modern steelmaking process , the stainless steel production make it competitive. For this, a 70- was t - arc furnace installed. RWTH Aachen appointed him professor in 1953.

Scherer was a member of the VDEh and has reported regularly to its materials committee since the beginning of his activity. He headed the school committee for eight years and was a member of the VDEh board of directors as well as the board of trustees of the Max Planck Institute for Iron Research . From 1954 to 1967 Scherer was a personally supporting member of the Max Planck Society , and he also represented the corporate supporting member Deutsche Edelstahlwerke AG.
