Robert Schneider (painter, 1944)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Robert Schneider (born July 29, 1944 in Buchheim, municipality of March (Breisgau) near Freiburg im Breisgau ) is a contemporary German painter and draftsman.

Life

Schneider grew up on a small farm that was only managed for self-sufficiency. Upbringing was fraught with conflict, so he left home early. In the 1960s he toured Europe and discovered his passion for art. After returning to Baden, he married and had a son and has had a granddaughter since 2005. Schneider lives and works in Hamburg.

Working method

Schlachthof I , 1985, acrylic on canvas, 140 × 110 cm, owned by the artist.

Influenced by surrealist motifs and the political discussions around 1968, Schneider discovered representational painting with its content-related and committed positions.

Images are created that deal with people and their legacies without showing them. Relocations to Frankfurt, Düsseldorf and Hamburg follow. The positive suggestions associated with the change of location later lead to a “reflection of the century”. Schneider shows this painterly reflection and analysis of the past century at the places visited, such as Bitterfeld , Kattowitz , Auschwitz , Verdun , Bremen-Farge and Baku / Azerbaijan. During these work trips, countless sketches and photos are created on site as a basis for work. In the studio, the impressions are condensed and subjected to the background of the statement. The result are the cycles created between 1991 and 2002. However, Schneider is not satisfied with the inventory, but continues the series with apocalyptic visions into the 21st century. These include the oil cycle and, above all, the fish and meat series : matter becomes a metaphor. This reflection of the century, created over twelve years, is Schneider's main work. His oeuvre also includes single images, triptychs and small series.
