Robert Smith, 3rd Baronet

Sir Robert Hill Smith, 3rd Baronet (born April 15, 1958 ) is a Scottish politician.

Life

Smith was born in 1958 to the lawyer Sir Gordon Smith, 2nd Baronet and his wife Diana . He attended the Merchant Taylors' School and the University of Aberdeen . With the death of his father in 1983 Smith inherited his title of nobility as 3rd  Baronet , of Crowmallie in the County of Aberdeen . On August 13, 1993, he married Fiona Anne Cormack . The marriage resulted in three children, Elizabeth , Helen (* 1994) and Kirsty (* 1997).

Political career

Smith first appeared in the 1987 general election to national elections. For the SDP he ran in the constituency of Aberdeen North . Smith was defeated, however, by Labor candidate Robert Hughes . With the merger of the SDP with the Liberal Party to form the Liberal Democrats , Smith became a member of this party.

In the 1997 general election , Smith ran for the mandate of the newly created constituency of West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine as part of the constituency reform . With 41.1%, he received the highest share of the vote and subsequently moved into the British House of Commons for the first time . In the following elections in 2001 , 2005 and 2010 , Smith held his mandate. After massive voting losses in the general election in 2015 , Smith retired from the House of Commons in third place behind the SNP candidate Stuart Donaldson and the conservative Alexander Burnett .
