Robert Spiske (born January 29, 1821 in Lissa near Breslau ; † March 5, 1888 in Breslau ) was a Catholic priest and founder of the Hedwig Sisters .

Life

From 1831 Robert Spiske attended the cathedral school in Breslau as a pupil of the St. Johannes Hospital for the boys' choirs of the Breslau cathedral, from 1835 the Matthias grammar school , where he passed the matriculation examination in 1843. After studying philosophical and theological studies at the University of Breslau, on June 18, 1846, Prince-Bishop Melchior von Diepenbrock gave him the sacrament of ordination . He was active as a pastor in the diocese of Breslau , initially as chaplain and curate in various parishes, from 1864 to 1883 as pastor at St. Dorothea in Breslau. In 1875 he became archpriest and city deckan of Breslau, in 1883 canon , cathedral preacher and councilor in the general vicariate of Breslau.

A special focus of his pastoral work was youth work and the recovery of those believers who had become estranged from the church. In order to give orphaned children a home, he founded the congregation of the Hedwig Sisters in Breslau , which was founded four years after Robert Spiske's death by Pope Leo XIII. was declared a congregation under papal law . Because of his commitment to the disadvantaged, Robert Spiske was called "Angel of Caritas" in Breslau. He died on March 5, 1888 and was buried in the Breslau Cathedral . In 1984 his bones were transferred to the church of the Mother House of the Hedwig Sisters.
