Robert Ignatius Stack (born February 1, 1896 in Amsterdam , Montgomery County , New York , USA , † March 20, 1988 in King George , King George County Virginia , USA) was an American general staff officer with the rank of brigadier general .

Professional background

Robert Stack was an alumnus of Cornell University in Ithaca , New York. He served in the American armed forces from 1917 to 1953 .

Stack was used in World War I and thereafter in China and the Philippines before participating in World War II in North Africa and Operation Shingle . In June 1943 he was promoted to brigadier general for a limited period. He was deputy commander from February 1944 to October 1945 and from October 1945 until its dissolution on December 15, 1945 after her return to the United States, commander of the 36th Infantry Division ("Texas Division").

Stack was the US general to whom the former Commander in Chief of the Air Force Hermann Göring surrendered on May 7, 1945, and was arrested as a result. Stack was the first to question Goering on May 8, 1945. Shortly before, troops under Stack's command had arrested General Field Marshal Gerd von Rundstedt in Bad Tölz.

During the Korean War , Stack trained as deputy reserve commanding officer at Camp Roberts, California . In 1953 he retired.

Private life

Stack was married to Sherry D Stack (1904-1982). Robert I. Stack died in King George, Virginia in March 1988 at the age of 92. He is buried next to his wife in Culpeper National Cemetery in Culpeper , Culpeper County , Virginia .
