Robert Topel

Robert Harry Topel (* 1952 ) is an American economist and university professor .

Career, research and teaching

Topel studied at the University of California, Santa Barbara , where he in 1974 as a Bachelor of Arts graduate . He then continued his studies at the University of California, Los Angeles , where he received his first position as Candidate of Philosophy in 1978 and Ph.D. in December 1980. completed. From 1980 he was an assistant professor and from 1983 as an associate professor to the scientific staff of the University of Chicago . In 1985 he returned to UCLA, where he was appointed full professor the following year . In the same year, however, he followed a call from the University of Chicago, where he has been researching and teaching ever since.

Topel's work focuses on health , work and industrial economics . For example, he dealt with economic issues relating to the welfare state . Among other things, he developed a framework for assessing improvements in the health and life expectancy of individuals, together with Kevin M. Murphy he was awarded the Arrow Prize in 2007 .

From 1993 to 2003 Topel was editor of the Journal of Political Economy . Between 1991 and 1993 he was a member of the editorial board of the American Economic Review , and in 1983 he was the founding editor of the Journal of Labor Economics .
