Robert IV (Eu)

Robert IV d'Artois (* probably 1356 - † July 20, 1387 in Naples ) was the second and oldest surviving son of Jean d'Artois , called Jean Sans Terre (Johann Ohneland), Count of Eu , and Isabeau de Melun .

Around 1376 he married the twelve years older Johanna (Giovanna) of Sicily (* 1344), daughter of Duke Karl von Durazzo and herself former Duchess of Durazzo ( Durrës in Albania ), as well as widow of Count Ludwig von Beaumont-le-Roger († 1372).

On April 6, 1387, Robert IV inherited his father's property, the county of Eu and the dominions of Saint-Valery and Ault , but did not learn of his father's death, as he and his wife were in Castel dell'Ovo on July 20, 1387 fell victim to a poison attack by Johanna's younger sister Margarethe von Durazzo . Robert and Johanna were buried in the Church of San Lorenzo Maggiore in Naples .

Robert and Johanna's marriage had remained childless. Robert's successor in Eu was his younger brother Philippe d'Artois , who became a connétable of France in 1392 , was captured by the Ottomans at the Battle of Nicopolis in 1396 and died on June 16, 1397 in Micalizo , Anatolia .
