Robert-Alain de Beaugrande

Robert-Alain de Beaugrande ( 1946 - June 2008 ) was an Austrian linguist .

Beaugrande obtained a master's degree in German and English from the Free University of Berlin in 1971 and received her doctorate in comparative literature and linguistics from the University of California, Irvine in 1976 . He received professorships in English at the University of Florida (1978–1991), the University of Vienna (1991–1997), the University of Botswana (1997–1999), the United Arab Emirates University (1999–2001), the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (2001–2002; as visiting professor ), the Universidade Federal da Paraíba (2005–2006) and the University of Primorska (2006–2007). Between 1979 and 1999 he also accepted numerous visiting professorships .

Beaugrande was able to give lectures in six languages ​​and was known for his social commitment. He published his scientific work in full text for free download on his website (see web links).

In his work he devoted himself to various disciplines of general and applied linguistics ( text , corpus linguistics , discourse analysis , grammar theory , psycholinguistics , semiotics, etc.), literary studies and psychology . He also acted as a translator for specialist publications. His publications appeared in 17 languages, including his introduction to text linguistics (with Wolfgang Dressler ).
