Robert of Newminster (also Robert of Newminster; * early 12th century in Gargrave , Yorkshire , England ; † June 7, 1159 in Newminster ) was the first abbot of Newminster Abbey from 1138 . Despite reports of the miracles that are said to have occurred at his tomb, he has remained a non-canonized saint , whose veneration was confirmed in the Cistercian Order in 1656 . His feast day is June 7th .

Robert studied at the Sorbonne in Paris , was first a secular priest , then a Benedictine monk in Whitby . In 1132 he became a Cistercian monk in Fountains Abbey and from 1138 the first abbot of the Cistercian abbey at Newminster Abbey near Morpeth (Northumberland) . The founding of the monasteries Pipewell Abbey , Roche Abbey and Sawley Abbey in northern England go back to him.
