Roberts Zīle (born June 20, 1958 in Riga ) is a Latvian economist and politician of the Tēvzemei ​​un Brīvībai / LNNK party . Since 2006 he was their party leader. He is the former finance minister and minister for communications in his country. He has been a member of the European Parliament since 2004 .

Life

Zīle attended secondary school No. 25 in Riga and graduated in 1981 with a degree in economics from the University of Latvia . In 1997 he received his PhD in economics from the Latvian Agricultural University in Jelgava

politics

During the 1990s Zīle was a member of the Riga City Council. In 1995 he was elected one of the Rigans' deputies in the 6th Saeima . From 1997 to 1998 he served as finance minister in the cabinet of Guntars Krasts . Under Prime Ministers Vilis Krištopans , Andris Šķēle , and Andris Bērziņš , he was State Secretary for International Trade and Financial Institutions. Einars Repše made him his Minister for Communication from 2002 to 2004. He then moved to Brussels as a member of the European Parliament . In the 2006 elections for the 9th Saeima, Zīle was a candidate for Tēvzemei ​​un Brīvībai / LNNK for the office of Prime Minister.

In the 2009 European elections , he was the top candidate of his party and entered the European Parliament . After TB / LNNK had previously been part of the Union for a Europe of Nations parliamentary group , it joined the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) after it broke up. Zīle was appointed to lead the new political group and was a member of the Committee on Transport and Tourism and the delegation for relations with the People's Republic of China. He was a deputy in the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs , in the delegation in the EU-Chile Joint Parliamentary Committee and in the delegation in the Euro-Latin America Parliamentary Assembly. Also in the European elections in 2014 and 2019 he was able to vote for the Nacionālā apvienība “Visu Latvijai!” - “Tēvzemei ​​un Brīvībai / LNNK” , as the successor party of the TB / LNNK, each win a seat in parliament.

Zīle is one of the 89 people from the European Union against whom Russia imposed an entry ban in May 2015 .
