Robin Carnahan

Robin Carnahan (born August 4, 1961 in Rolla , Missouri ) is an American politician and belongs to the Democratic Party . From 2005 to 2013, she was the Secretary of State in Missouri.

The lawyer Carnahan gained experience abroad, including in Hungary and the Czech Republic , when she was commissioned by the National Democratic Institute in the early 1990s to monitor free elections in former communist countries. She also worked for the Export-Import Bank of the United States , a financial institution that promotes US foreign trade.

She won the election as Secretary of State in 2004 against Catherine Hanaway of the Republicans , whereupon she succeeded Matt Blunt, who moved to the office of governor , on January 9, 2005 . Although she was diagnosed with breast cancer, as she announced in February 2006, she continued to perform her duties while she was on treatment. In November 2008 she was confirmed in office by a large majority.

In 2010 Robin Carnahan was nominated by the Democrats for election to the US Senate . However, she did not succeed in succeeding the no longer candidate Kit Bond : With 43:57 percent, she was defeated by Republican Roy Blunt .

family

The Carnahan family is a well-known figure in the Missouri state political scene. Her father Mel Carnahan was governor here, among other things, her mother Jean Carnahan represented Missouri in the US Senate . Her grandfather, ASJ Carnahan, was a member of Congress and US Ambassador to Sierra Leone . Her brother Russ was also a congressman.
