Robinson: The Journey is a virtual reality - computer game , which by the German development studio Crytek developed and in November 2016 PlayStation 4 and in February 2017 Microsoft Windows was released. The game requires the possession of a PlayStation VR or Oculus Rift and has been optimized for the PlayStation 4 Pro .

The game is based on the CryEngine specially developed by Crytek .

Action and gameplay

Robinson: The Journey is about a space traveler named Robinson who crashed with his spaceship Esmeralda with an escape capsule on the planet Tyson III, an alien planet with dinosaurs. The aim of the game is to escape from this planet. Robinson is helped by a flying AI robot unit called HIGS and his pet James Laika , a dinosaur.

The player can use his multi-tool to scan living beings, whereby HIGS stores information about them, which the player can then call up at any time, and grab and throw away objects similar to the Gravity Gun from Half Life 2 . It also has a laser pointer , with which the player can bring Laika to him by indicating where she should go by lighting it up and then calling her.

reception

Robinson: The Journey received a mostly mediocre reception from the trade press . On the rating website Metacritic , the game has a Metascore of 64 out of 100 possible points based on 46 ratings .

The German-language online computer game magazine GamePro rated the game positively and was of the opinion that "Robinson: The Journey is undoubtedly one of the most intense experiences in the still young medium of virtual reality".

Spiegel Online praised the graphics of the game, but criticized the story they thought was poor and that the game seemed too unfinished.

The German-language online magazine 4Players rated the PlayStation 4 version of the game with 63 out of a possible 100 points and awarded the brand “satisfactory”.

The German computer game magazine PC Games criticized the “sometimes awkward tracking” and the fact that “some checkpoints sometimes seem arbitrarily placed” and praised the “excellent presentation”.

Bild criticized the fact that playing games could lead to VR disease , "[...] because [the standard controls] jerk the rotations in quarter-circle rotations [s] and thus [confused] the eye" and that the game is too expensive and lengthy and does not use its full potential. The game's graphics were particularly praised. It is incomprehensible that the game is not compatible with the PlayStation Move controllers, since "[...] the game [is] predestined for it".
